You will find the Winged Foot Golf Club Mamaroneck, New York, and it features 18-hole golf courses.

The famed golf architect A.W. Tillinghast built the West Course of the Winged Foot Golf Club way back in 1923, although Gil Hanse updated it in 2017.

Way back then, every fairway of the Winged Foot West had Norway Spruce on all sides. The recent upgrade made it splendidly open and seeming more playable.

But then you eventually reach the greens, which feature the original Tillinghast design. These greens resemble giant mushrooms as they were curled against the edges.

So, how difficult is it to play here? Take note that when Bryson DeChambeau won the 2020 U.S. Open when it was hosted by Winged Foot, he was the only player to finish under par!

You must be a very lucky guy if you’re ever invited to join the Winged Foot Golf Club, enabling you to hobnob with the likes of Former President Donald Trump and basketball coaching legend Rick Pitino. The waiting list for the membership is rumored to be a decade long—that’s how long you may have to wait even if you make your calls today.

There’s nothing definitive about the costs of membership as well. The NY Post reported that the initiation fee is $150,000 but another Forbes article pegs this at $200,000. The estimates for the annual dues set them at $15,000 depending on what type of membership you obtain. It’s not cheap at all.

Winged Foot and the US Open

Winged Foot played host for the US Open 6 times in its history. They hosted it in 1929, 1974, 1984, 2006, and 2020. That makes Winged Foot as the 3rd most frequent host of the US Open, after Oakmont and Baltusrol.

Rumor has it that after hosting the US Open in 2006, Winged Foot was asked to host it again in 2015. But the members of Winged Foot actually voted against it!

Other Winged Foot Golf Tourneys

The US open wasn’t the only serious golf tournament that Winged Foot has hosted. These include:

  • US Amateur. 1940, 2004
  • US Women’s Open. 1957, 1972
  • US Senior Open. 1980
  • PGA Championship. 1997

Take note that for the US Women’s Open and the US Senior Open, the game was played on the East Course. Both the East and West courses were also used for the 2004 US Amateur.
