History (Year Opened)

The course was designed by Charles B. Macdonald. MacDonald is hailed as the “father of golf” in Chicago.

It was opened in 1892. The Chicago Golf Club’s course is now being used by Downers Grove Golf Course.

The Chicago Golf Club was also home to the first American woman who has won an Olympic event – member to the club was golfer Margaret Abbot.

The popularity of the small golf club spread so much that the members of the golf club bought another piece of property to increase the holes from 9 to 18. The increase occurred a year just after the golf course was made.

Several tournament were held here: the 1897 US Open and Amateur, the 1900 US Open, the 1911 US Open, the 1928 Walker Cup, the 2005 Walker Cup, and the 2018 US Senior Women’s Open.

The Chicago Golf Club underwent total remodeling in 1922 to keep up with modern golf course design, with the changes spearheaded by Seth Raynor, who was also Macdonald’s design protege.

The club was also the first to use bent grass for the greens.

The Chicago Golf Club is one of the five founders of what would become known today as USGA, the governing body of golf sports.
