With the Wilmington Country Club in Delaware, you know you’re in for an absolute treat when you become a member (or even a guest) in the clubhouse. It’s not for nothing that it’s one of the Platinum Clubs of America, which means it’s among the top 150 country clubs in the whole country. When you consider the many thousands of country clubs littering the whole country, you’ll realize just how good it is here.
The club doesn’t advertise its initiation fees, although there were reports that the membership initiation fee was $55,000—back in 2014. There’s a good chance that it’s higher these days, since the membership leadership reportedly favors raising the initiation fees to pay for new amenities, rather than to lower the buy-in to attract new members.
Higher initiation fees do make sense, since new amenities also attract new members. It doesn’t hurt that the prestige of the Wilmington Country Club hasn’t been diminished since it was formally established way back in 1901.
Of course, for many it’s the golf course that’s the selling point. You get 36 holes of championship golf, designed by the famous Robert Trent Sr. and Dick Wilson. The golf courses host several tournaments each year for members (along with several USGA championships), and you have a full-length driving range and a full short-game facility to help you get better.
With 20 tennis courts here, tennis fans won’t have to run out of playing courts. What’s more these courts offer several types of surfaces, including clay and glass courts with both indoor and outdoor hard courts. You also have several squash courts for both singles and doubles play, and even a high-tech paddle facility with pickleball courts. Then there are the 2 bocce courts, and the grass courts for croquet. The tennis center is so good that it’s been recently named as the “Tennis Club of the Year” by the United States Tennis Association’s Middle States Section.
Of course, you also have the fitness center. It’s equipped with state-of-the-art workout machines, with classes for yoga, Pilates, and other group exercise classes. Massage treatments and physical therapy are also available.
Add the ample dining options, and it’s obvious why the Wilmington Country Club is considered one of the best in the country.
