In this day and age, it seems presumptions for a country club to just refer to itself simply as The Country Club. But then again, this country club in Brookline Massachusetts is one of the oldest country clubs in the country, if not the oldest club in the country. Its golf course was built way back in 882. It’s actually one of the 5 charter clubs that founded the US Golf Association, and it has hosted lots of USGA tournaments every since.
These tournaments include the 1913 US Open, the 1988 US Open Championship, and the 1999 Ryder Cup. It will also host the US Open in June, 2020. That’s the 4th US Open to play here in Brookline.
Actually, The Country Club has hosted at least one USGA Championship in 12 of the 13 decades since 1900. Here, golfers can enjoy 27 holes of golf, with a 9-hole course supplementing the 18-hole championship golf course. Golf Digest lists the Main Course here as 17th among America’s Top 100 Golf Courses.
Other amenities include 3 dining rooms with total seating of 150. But in the summer, that’s expanded to 250 seats. There are other rooms for special events, along with other facilities for games such as tennis, paddle tennis, squash, and even curling.
Tennis enthusiasts will appreciate how there are 5 tennis courts indoors, and another 4 courts outdoors. There are also facilities for hockey (it’s near Boston, after all), skating, and also skeet shooting. There is, of course, a swimming pool, along with a poolside café for total relaxation with family and friends. It also features formal and informal dining rooms, with a fully stocked wine cellar.
All in all, you have 236 acres of lush surroundings, located just as few miles from Boston. The membership is quite exclusive, even though the membership numbers to around 1300. Getting in is so difficult that even the wife of the Massachusetts governor of the time was rejected when she applied.
The membership costs aren’t explicitly stated, though some estimates peg the membership initiation costs up to half a million dollars, with monthly dues of about $1,500.
