The SLCC near downtown Clayton is one of the most exclusive country clubs in the St. Louis area, and it’s a club that not easy to get into. For one, you can’t just apply. You will need to be invited, and that’s when you get into the waiting list. After all, this is one of the top 100 (Top 99, to be more exact) Platinum Clubs of America. It’s not just a hangout for the neighborhood.
Then you have to deal with the fees, which aren’t publicized at all. Back in 2005, reports surfaced that the membership initiation fee at the time was already $50,000. Today, that membership fee is likely a lot nearer to $100,000 with perhaps monthly dues of $1,000.
The club is so secretive that they don’t even offer a lot of information on their website. That website of theirs is basically just for members, and for those who want to apply for employment at the club. The most that the website will reveal is that the St. Louis Country Club offers golf, tennis, swimming, and several dining facilities. Not exactly surprising data.
Actually, many consider the fees at SLCC to be quite the bargain. The place reeks of old money, with its unmistakable old-fashioned charm. You’ll notice the red tile roof, black shutters, and the white stucco, and then you go in and encounter the antiques and chintz. The color scheme isn’t really modern with pink and green predominant, and even the golf course is old-school Scottish-style.
The membership average age isn’t exactly young, and there’s very little demand for modern improvements. For the current members, the whole clubhouse works as it stands. It doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone. It just is.
Members here simply love to relax, and they even frown a bit on excessive business dealing here. It’s a true retreat where you just want to bask in the elegance of the club, while you indulge in the traditional games of the upper class. Play golf and admire the surroundings, and then get some exercise with tennis or swimming. Enjoy the master dishes in the club. That’s all there is to it.
