Quite a lot of country clubs around the US bear a similar name, but here, we are focusing on the Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, New York. This is most likely the first country club to use the “Sleepy Hollow” designation, since the club was formally established back in 1911.
The first members were among the most notoriously rich in the US. They had names like Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Astor, Colgate, Harriman, and Vanderlip. This is the kind of elite exclusivity that persists for the club today, which is why the membership information for Sleepy Hollow Country Club is so scant as to be nonexistent.
No one’s saying what the initiation fees and annual dues are, although it is certain that membership here is only by invitation. Even the use of wireless devices is forbidden except on the paved parking lots and inside the guest bedrooms. There’s no way you can just take pictures there.
What’s known is that there are several types of memberships. There’s the Regular membership, which allows for full access to everything. Associate members don’t have full use of the golfing facilities, though they can ask permission from the Board.
National and International memberships are for those who don’t have a home or a regular place of business within 100 miles of the clubhouse. These members all have full access, but only while the Board permits it.
The Junior Regular membership is for those within the age range of 21 to 35 years old—the membership ends when they turn 36 years old. These members can also use all the facilities, but the Board can also terminate the membership with or without cause.
With these memberships, you may be able to enjoy amenities such as the fantastic golf course and practice facilities. This golf course remains one of the best in the country, and the most recent Golf Digest ranking places it as #62 in the country.
Then you have the 10 Har-Tru courts for tennis along with the pro shop and lessons. Squash players have 3 international-sized courts and a North American Doubles-sized court, plus the pro shop and lessons. In addition, there are four paddle courts and a fully equipped paddle hut.
Then there’s the pool, along with the riding stables. Add all the fantastic dining options here, and it truly is a classic country club.
