The Scioto Country Club has been an integral part of the history of Upper Arlington, Ohio, which is located on the northwest side of the Columbus metropolitan area. That’s been true since its founding in 1916, and it’s still among the very best country clubs in the whole country. It fully deserves its standing as a Platinum Club of America.
The golf course is the first 18-hole course in central Ohio, and it was designed by the famed golf architect Donald Ross. It’s also famous as the golf course where Jack Nicklaus learned to play golf. The course has hosted numerous important golf tourneys, starting with the 1926 US Open Championship. Other tournaments include the 1931 Ryder Cup, the 1950 PGA Championship, the 1968 US Amateur, the 1986 Senior US Open, and the 2016 US Senior Open.
The most recent renovation for the golf course was in 2008, and that was overseen by Jack Nicklaus himself. It was upgraded and modernized, but it still retains the characteristic Donald Ross features.
In addition to the golf course, you also have the huge clubhouse with almost 80,000 square feet of space. It offers spectacular views over the golf course and the stately homes in the area, along various dining facilities. This is where you can hold wedding celebrations for up to 300 guests, or where you can just sit back and relax in the more casual restaurants.
Of course, there are also tennis courts, including facilities for platform tennis and pickleball. It has 9 Har-Tru courts plus 2 hard courts, along with 2 pickleball courts. The club also has 4 heated, elevated courts for platform tennis.
You also have 4 pools, which includes a competition lap pool for year-round swimming. You can also exercise in the 13,500 sq. ft. fitness center. Or you can just relax in the Warming Hut, with its full bar, fireplace, and TVs.
Children are especially welcome here, and they can take lessons in golf, swimming, and tennis. The club’s social calendar features up to 70 different events for the entire family.
Membership is rumored to be by invitation only, with a reported membership initiation fee of at least $70,000 for the full golf membership. The other types of memberships should cost less.
