Golf Course Quality
Of course, they do have lots of reasons to be snotty. The SFGC is old, as it’s been around since 1895.
The golf course was designed by A.W. Tillinghast, who was the most highly regarded golf architect of his time, and who was also inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
Tillinghast was famed for building at least 265 different golf courses, and the San Francisco Golf Club course is considered his first masterpiece. It is also the only Tillinghast golf design that can be found west of Texas.
Even now, the SFGC continues to delight golf enthusiasts, and Golf Digest ranks it as the 36th in its 2021-2022 list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.

Membership
The San Francisco Golf Club is so exclusive that there’s no definitive information regarding its membership fees and procedures. Membership is by invitation only, and the entire process takes a while. In fact, by the time the membership process concludes, the “new” member won’t really feel all that new.
However, it is public knowledge that its membership includes the famous Condoleezza Rice and famed financier Charles Robert Schwab.
Notable Features
Its signature hole and its best par-3 hole is the famous 7th hole. This is also known as the “duel hole”, as it overlooks the site where the last legal duel in California was held. This was in 1859, when a Justice of the California Supreme Court shot and killed a US Senator. Good times.
You will find Monterey Cypress and pine trees lining the course, which offers breathtaking views. Curiously, there aren’t any water hazards here. But you’ll encounter lots of large bunkers, while you deal with the soft elevation changes and gentle doglegs.
The entire atmosphere is retro, so much so that you might feel that you’ve traveled back in time. That’s especially true when you’re in the men’s locker room and its unmistakable retro vibes. You’ll find rows of sepia tones, with wooden cubicles on which you’ll see the polished golf shoes.
You can be forgiven for thinking that at any moment, Walter Hagen or Bobby Jones will appear right around a corner.
