Located in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Township in Michigan, the Oakland Hills Country Club doesn’t just have an 18-hole golf course designed by Donald Ross. There are actually 2 of them.
The country club has hosted plenty of famous golf tourneys on their courses, including 3 PGA Championships and 6 US Opens. There were also the US Senior Open for 1981 and 1991, the 2004 Ryder Cup and the US Amateur for 2002 and 2016.
The Oakland Hills Country Club was founded in 1916, with the South Course opening in 1918 and the North Course added in 1923. The older South Course is perhaps the more famous, and it’s also more challenging. In fact, it’s known as “The Monster”. Only 3 players in the last 4 US Opens here have played under par!
However, tragedy struck at the end of February in 2002, when a fire engulfed the main clubhouse. However, the country club authorities have vowed that they will rebuild and continue the legacy of the Oakland Hills Country Club.
That means continuing the traditional atmosphere of the club, where it has always been a stickler for conservative values. The rules for proper attire have always been stringent, and here it’s best that members and guests err on the side of dressing up rather than going with more relaxed apparel. Business casual is the preferred mode of dress, and jeans aren’t even allowed.
Oakland Hills Country Club has about 550 members, and some of them have the full golf membership for which they paid the membership initiation fee of at least $72,000.
That’s not yet counting the yearly dues and fees that can go at least $8,400. There are also minimum food and drinks charges of at least another $1,000 per year.
Though membership costs aren’t cheap, many consider membership here as worth the price. For many, the clubhouse is almost like a second home.
It offers a relaxing atmosphere for socialization and respite from the busy urban work life. The dining facilities were superb, and will be again once they rebuild the main clubhouse to its former glory.
