When this country club transferred in 1922 to Pittsford, New York, it was a barren farmland, with 355 acres with no tree in sight. While the country club hired the famous Donald Ross to design the 2 golf courses, they also asked a retired doctor named John Ralston Williams to decorate the Ross-designed courses. Williams’ solution was to put in thousands of trees. When he was asked how many oak trees he put in, he said he stopped counting after 40,000 oak trees.

The East and West golf courses are terrific, with the East course listed by Golf Digest as one of the top 100 greatest golf courses in the US in 2015. Some upgrades were made by Robert Trent Jones during the 1960s, while Tom Fazio also offered enhancements for the 1989 Open and 2003 PGA. Andrew Green completed a complete restoration in 2019, and that resulted in a 22nd ranking on the Golf Digest list of the Top 100 Golf Courses in America for 2019.

The club has hosted various prestigious golf tournaments, including the US Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, the US Senior Open, the US Amateur, and the Senior PGA Championship. The Oak Hill Country Club will also the PGA Championship for the fourth time in 2023, and this ties the record of the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
