The Maidstone Club is one of the earliest golf residential communities, and it’s one of the first to offer a links course. It was founded way back in 1891, and it is located in the village of East Hampton, New York.
Its golf course is ranked 64th best in the US by Golf Digest. It’s a seaside course that comes with plenty of history. According to legend, Booby Jones said that it was one of the greatest golf courses in the US for match play, due to the last 3 holes.
Maidstone is actually a full-service family club, with various amenities for every member of the family. There’s golf, of course, and in fact there are 2 of them. One offers 18 holes while the other one is a 9-hole course.
Tennis enthusiasts will love it here, since it offers a variety of court surfaces. It has 19 grass tennis courts, along with 4 Har-Tru clay courts. It also offers a private beach along with a pool, and a huge clubhouse with total floor coverage of 47,000 square feet.
Maidstone is a very private club, and it doesn’t even have anything useful in its website unless you’re a member. It also doesn’t publicize its membership fees. It does have a rather blueblood reputation, which is why reports peg the membership initiation fee at $250,000.
Membership is quite exclusive, and usually it has less than 500 regular members and fewer than a hundred Junior Privilege members. To join, you first need a current member to propose your application, and that member will write a letter on your behalf. You’ll then need supporting letters from 3 other members, and finally there’s a vetting process from the admissions committee.
Applicants need to be at least 25 years old before they become even a junior club privileges member, and often, they’re proposed in by current members who are close relatives. Usually, parents propose their children to become JCP members when they come of age.
Full members pay at least $10,000 a year in dues, plus a non-refundable fee of about $3,000 for the food and beverages. JCP members pay more than $3,000 a year in annual dues, with at least $600 for food and drinks.
