The club was founded by the wealthiest people of Toledo back in 1903. Even at the start, the people here were absolute fans of golf. They had Donald Ross expand their original 9-hole golf course into a proper 18-hole golf course in 1919, and the result was a fantastic golf course that people just won’t forget.
In fact, even though Donald Ross designed hundreds of golf courses, Inverness was one of only seven golf courses that Ross discussed in his unpublished book.
Even way back, the golf course was great enough to host major championships. The 1920 US Open was held at Inverness Club.
The golf course, over the years, hosted the US Open 4 times, the PGA Championship twice, the US Senior Open twice, and the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship twice. It has also hosted the US Amateur, the US Junior Amateur, and the Solheim Cup.
Inverness Club isn’t resting on its laurels, either, as it’s set to host the 2027 US Women’s Open and the 2029 US Amateur.

For just about every invited applicant, it’ll be worth it just for the chance to play golf here in this course. Golf Digest has ranked Inverness Club among the best golf courses in the country since 1966. Currently, Golf Digest has Inverness Club at #65 among the 100 Greatest Ranking golf courses.
It’s not all about golf, however. As a country club, it’s a terrific venue for weddings and other special events. It has 10 tennis courts along with professional instruction. It has 3 seasonal paddle tennis courts and a heated paddle hut facility.
Here you also have a standard size swimming pool, with diving well and wading pool, a top-of-the-line fitness center, and 5 dining venues.
