As such a large city, it’s not really surprising that Houston is home for more than 50 country clubs and golf courses. The Houston Country Club is one of the oldest, as it was established back in 1908. It’s also among the most successful clubs in the Houston area, with revenues of $20.7 million in 2016. In fact, it’s the 14th wealthiest non-profit country club in the whole US.
The membership for HCC is quite exclusive, starting with the requirement that a member must sponsor your application. Reports have it that there’s normally a 3-year waiting list, and there’s also a minimum member initiation fee of at least $125,000. At least the waiting list is actually shorter than what you’ll have to endure if you apply to the River Oaks Country Club, which the HCC enjoys a friendly rivalry with.
But then again, you’re getting your money’s worth. At the very least, you’re now part of a vast network of the most influential people in the city.
Then of course, you also have the topnotch par-72 golf course, with plenty of tennis courts, swimming pools, and excellent dining options. You get all these, along with the magnificent views of the beautifully landscaped grounds. It’s a terrific retreat from the city.
The overall vibe here is quite relaxed. Despite the grand surroundings, the atmosphere is decidedly low-key. This is in stark contrast with the more prestigious River Oaks Country Club in the same city, which some people might deem a bit too stuffy.
Here in the Houston Country Club, it’s more of a contemporary country club retreat. You don’t have that Old South baggage, and you won’t have to feel guilty about any politically incorrect trappings. This may be the South, but it’s the modern south that any current-day American will be proud of.
It’s part and parcel of the friendly Tanglewood community, and in fact, the entire community gives off a noticeable clubby atmosphere. This is the same country club where George H.W. Bush played golf, as he was a Tanglewood resident.
This is also the place where he met longtime friends and political allies such as James Baker and Robert Mosbacher. As a member of the HCC, there’s no doubt that here, your networking efforts will pay off.
