The Charlotte Country Club can be found 4 miles east of Charlotte, right in the historic neighborhood of Plaza-Midwood. You’ll find plenty of history with the club itself, since it has been there since 1910. Even after more than a century of service, the club remains one of the top 20 country clubs in the US, and it’s regarded as one of the top 50 Platinum Clubs in the world.
The main feature is of course the golf course, originally designed by Donald Ross. Ross’s efforts started in 1915, and he continued to upgrade the course well into the 1940s.
It was recently restored by architect Ron Richard, and this included putting in advanced SubAir cooling systems beneath the greens. Still, Richard rebuilt all the greens and bunkers in the style that Donald Ross preferred. His efforts led to Golf Digest awarding the golf course the Best Remodel of the Year for 2009. In 2021, the golf course ranked 172nd on the Golf Digest listing of the Top 200 golf courses in America,
The club has hosted several USGA championships, including the 1972 U.S. Men’s Amateur, 2000 U.S. Senior Men’s Amateur, 2010 U.S. Women’s Amateur, and the 2018 USGA U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
The clubhouse measures 68,000 square feet, and it was also remodeled in 2008-09. The work emphasized the rich history of the club, as it brought out the original millwork and moldings, along with the murals, chandeliers, and ancient furniture.
Yet the amenities are distinctly modern, starting with the athletic courts. Here you have 10 clay courts for tennis, along with 4 pickleball courts, 4 quickstart courts, and even 2 squash courts. The clubhouse also offers 5 swimming pools, with a competition swimming pool, another one for diving, a pool for adults and another for children, and even a wading pool for very young kiddies. The full membership initiation fee was set at $85,000 back in 2019, but this may have increased to $95,000. The monthly dues are estimated at about $940 per month. However, there’s a junior membership opportunity of those under the age of 35, with a 25% discount on the monthly dues.
