It seemed prophetic that the founders of this club would pick Century as the name of their country club, back in 1898. It still stands as one of the oldest and best country clubs in the country. That’s 125 (and counting) of history, right there. The country club transferred to a 100-acre site in Greenburgh, Westchester County, and it’s still there.
At first glance, you’d find the usual amenities and features that you’d expect from any first-class country club. There’s an 18-hole golf course and other golf facilities. There are tennis courts and paddle tennis courts. A pool is also available, along with various dining facilities.
What’s not so “usual” is that the golf course at Century is regularly regarded among the best in the state, by such expert groups as The Met Golfer and Golf Digest. It has also been listed by Links magazine as one of the 100 Most Prestigious Private Golf Clubs in the world.
Ben Hogan was even an assistant professional at this club., and later the head professional for a couple of years. That was, of course, before he would go on to win nine major championships.
Actually, the Century Country Club is among the Platinum Clubs of America. It’s also designated as a Distinguished Club of America.
Membership details are sketchy, because the club is extremely private. Even the number of members is very limited, and it’s rumored to cap at a maximum of 300 members. Very few openings for memberships come along, and there’s really no turnover to speak of. People just don’t leave these memberships once they’ve been attained.
After all, the original members of the club were among the topmost glitterati of their time. These included bankers, industrialists, politicians, and financiers. Among them was even Eugene Meyer, who was the owner of the Washington Post at the time, and also Benjamin Guggenheim.
You can even consider yourself lucky to get invited as a guest by one of the members here. And if you’re invited as a guest, you’re required to comply with the rather strict dress codes here, although “casual” attire is allowed. But you’ll have a great time there, nonetheless!
