History
It all started in 1978, when Tom Fazio started working on the Mountain golf course with his uncle (former tour golfer turned architect) George Fazio. The lavish course cost $6 million, and at the time that was a rather exorbitant sum. Tom even spent $1.5 million of this budget for the 16th and 17th holes, with 3 cascading waterfalls that cost $175,000 each. The Mountain opened to general acclaim in 1980.
Four years later would see the Addition of the 18-hole Desert championship course. There were also 500 residences available in the community, along with the huge Clubhouse that offered a fantastic view of the Santa Rosa Mountains.
The Golf Courses
These are the Mountain and Desert Courses, which both offer championship quality play. The Mountain is especially well-regarded, though both courses have won their share of awards.
The inaugural Vintage Invitational was held here in 1981, and it became the precursor to the PGA Senior Tour. Many golf legends have played here, including Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead, Don January, and Bobby Locke.
Other Attractions
The Clubhouse alone is huge, occupying a space of 85,000 square feet. It offers social and dining spaces that come with fantastic views overlooking the golf course, the lake, and the Santa Rosa Mountains.
Then there’s also the Spa and Wellness Center, which occupies 18,000 square feet. There are also the 11 championship-quality tennis courts, along with stadium seating that can accommodate up to a thousand spectators.
