Haven’t you noticed yet that the most prestigious country clubs in the US are generally among the oldest? This is certainly true with the Kansas City Country Club, which was established way back in 1896 in Kansas City, Missouri. That makes it the 3rd oldest country club west of the Mississippi.
It’s now located in Mission Hills Kansas, which is the wealthiest city in the KC metropolitan area. Forbes magazine even deems it as the 3rd wealthiest municipality in the whole US.
There are the residents that enjoy the KCCC amenities, as this country club is both a Platinum Club of America and also a Distinguished Emerald Club of the World.
It’s therefore surprising that the member initiation fee is so low, compared to what other exclusive country clubs might ask for. The membership initiation fee is only $55,00 with annual dues of $10,000.
That makes membership here at the KCCC a downright bargain. It starts with the fantastic golf, which was designed by the famed golf architect A. W. Tillinghast and then alter redesigned by the legendary Robert Trent Jones. It was also the home course of Tom Watson, and after learning to play here went on to win 8 major championships.
The KCCC leadership also uses the money they generate to regularly upgrade the clubhouse facilities. In 2004, they spent $5.6 million to put up the 2-story fitness center and aerobics studio, along with 7 tennis courts and 2 platform courts, plus additional indoor dining options.
Then they spent another $5.1 million in 2008, this time to renovate the pool complex. They renovated all the 4 swimming pools and rebuilt the pool house, which now features a full-service kitchen for indoor and outdoor dining. Most recently in 2014, they completed the $3.5 million renovation of the golf course and irrigation.
Dining is a true pleasure at the KCCC. Family dining is great in the West Room, while the Tavern is popular during the winter for casual dining. Then there’s the Brick for casual al fresco dining, while you enjoy great views of the golf course and the aquatics complex. There’s the Main Bar, next to the Terrace for fine dining. For casual dining, other options include the Men’s Grill and the Pool Café.
