Several country clubs use the name “Indian Hill Club”, so it can be confusing. Here we are focusing on the old-school Indian Hill Club, which was established in 1914.
For some, it’s also more famous as where Bill Murray once caddied. One of its founding members was Chick Evans, who gained fame as the first amateur to win both the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open in the same year (1916).
This is one terrific golf course here, which isn’t surprising considering that it was designed by the great Donald Ross, with some likely help from Harry Colt. It remains a throwback course that makes it rather underrated, but you will appreciate its charm once you play here. Aside from the golf course, you also have golf practice facilities as well.
Of course, you have your usual tennis courts and training facilities (plus the pro shop), along with the swimming pool.
Special note must be taken of the excellent dining options at this club. The main clubhouse is huge with 32,000 square feet of space, and here you have up to 6 dining facilities to pick from.
- There’s The Grill, which is a semi-formal dining venue that’s great for an intimate dinner, with a 32-seat capacity.
- You have the Centennial Room with up to 60 seats, and it’s an informal dining room that’s nicely bright and sunny.
- The Terrace is another informal dining area, but this time it’s outdoors. Here you get terrific views of the pond and the golf course. It has a max capacity of 180 seats.
- Located near the paddle courts, The Lodge is a full-service dining venue mainly for casual dining.
- If you’re near the pool, then you might want to enjoy The Summer House. It has 50 seats in the dining area, with another 80 seats on the veranda.
- Other spaces can combine in the clubhouse to accommodate larger events, such as banquets for 200 guests. These spaces offer fantastic views of the golf course.
No one’s talking about the membership initiation fees and annual dues here, as the club is very private. It serves mostly the rich residents of Chicago, and they’re not telling.
