The Country Club of Detroit in Grosse Point Farms, Michigan, is one of the oldest country clubs in the US. It was established way back in 1897. Yet it continues to offer fantastic services and amenities to its members and guests, as it has over the years. It’s still listed as a Platinum Club of America, making it among the top 150 best country clubs in the whole country.
Despite its long history, the CCD is actually a rather laidback country club, unlike the traditional and stuffier country clubs that are this old. Most country clubs with a history this long generally have an average membership age that’s way past 65 years old. But many of the older CCD members have relocated to Florida, it seems, and the newer members are much younger.
It does help to attract new members that the initiation fee is reasonably set at $10,000 with dues of about $500 a month. For many successful members, the total expenses are a downright bargain, considering the quality of the amenities that they receive.
Golf, of course, is the main attraction here, and the gorgeous Championship 18-hole golf course doesn’t disappoint at all. It was originally designed by Harry S. Colt, with upgrades over the years from Robert Trent Jones (Sr. and Jr.) and Tom Doak. Arnold Palmer won his first USGA title here in the 1954 US Amateur, and it hosted the US Senior Amateur in 2021.
Sports fans should also try out the 8 Har-Tru tennis courts, along with the paddle tennis courts, sports court, and lap pool. The new 6-lane bowling center is definitely top of the line.
There’s a new 4,000-square-foot fitness center, with plenty of equipment for strength training and cardio workouts. While the adults are playing, the kids can also hang out in the children’s day camp. The locker rooms and guest rooms are beautifully appointed. There are several options for playing cards, and there’s even a dog park. It really is for the whole family. It won’t be complete without great dining venues, and that’s what you get with the Country Club of Detroit. You have options for fine dining and more casual fare. This is basically your home away from home.
