The Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, is listed as one of the Platinum Clubs of America for 2021-22. It ranks 128th, which is formidable considering that there are more than 4,000 country clubs in the country. That just proves how the country club continuously offers premium amenities and facilities since its founding in 1936.

The membership here values its privacy, and the website is a stark reminder of this mindset. It doesn’t how any information about the club, aside from employment opportunities, a short history, and its focus on how its golf course has hosted the Charles Schwab Challenge since 1946. This is longest running non-major annual non-major PGA Tour event to be held at the same venue.

Membership is usually by invitation only. You need a personal sponsor among the current members for your nomination, and then you still need 3 endorsements from other members. You’ll then need to get 3 non-member references, and your application is then decided by the Board of Governors. Keep in mind that there’s a cap of 700 for the membership.

The reports regarding the fees for membership are conflicting. Some recent reports put the initiation fee at $60,000 with monthly dues of $500. But back in 2009, the initiation fee was already $80,000 for the full golf membership, with monthly dues of $470.

According to members, the charter allows for a member who wants to quit to get reimbursed for 30% of the initiation fee. That allows for new members, although people can stay on the waiting list for more than a year.

In any case, this has been an enclave of the old and rich families of Fort Worth since the 1930s. It harkens back to a somewhat Victorian age with fireplaces, staircases, and grand chandeliers. The front room displays the portrait of Ben Hogan, along with the 5 championship trophies he won at Colonial. The clubhouse has 2 dining areas with diners enjoying the grilled steaks, while there’s also a stocked salad bar. Aside from the delicious food and the terrific golf course, it’s an elegant yet private place for members to relax, swim, and get a drink.
